{"id":33,"date":"2012-08-20T10:51:56","date_gmt":"2012-08-20T10:51:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shared4.info\/buildingcodes\/?p=33"},"modified":"2023-08-26T13:35:03","modified_gmt":"2023-08-26T13:35:03","slug":"emergency-lighting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shared4.info\/buildingcodes\/emergency-lighting\/","title":{"rendered":"Emergency Lighting"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"container\">\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-1106918897076625\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<!-- Display Ad Horizontal --><br \/>\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-1106918897076625\" data-ad-slot=\"6198983087\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins><br \/>\n<script><br \/>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<br \/>\n<\/script><\/p>\n<h1>Emergency Lighting Requirements<\/h1>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"yellow\">\n<th>OCCUPANCY TYPE (new building)<\/th>\n<th>CODE REF.<\/th>\n<th>EMERGENCY LIGHTING<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>AMBULATORY (Sprinklered and Not Sprinklered)<\/td>\n<td>NFPA 101, 2012 (20.2.9.1 and 7.9)<\/td>\n<td>Emergency lighting is required.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>BUSINESS (Sprinklered and Not Sprinklered)<\/td>\n<td>NFPA 101, 2012 (38.2.9.1 and 7.9)<\/td>\n<td>Emergency lighting is required if one of the following conditions is met:<\/p>\n<p>a) The building is 2 stories above the level of exit discharge.<\/p>\n<p>b) The occupancy is subject to 50 occupants above or below the level of exit discharge.<\/p>\n<p>c) The total occupant load is subject to 300 occupants.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>HEALTHCARE<\/td>\n<td>NFPA 101, 2012 (18.2.9 and 7.9)<\/td>\n<td>Emergency lighting is required.<\/p>\n<p>Additional requirements may apply if the building is equipped with a life support system (refer to NFPA 99).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>EDUCATIONAL<\/td>\n<td>NFPA 101, 2012 (14.2.9 and 7.9)<\/td>\n<td>Emergency lighting is required.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>ONE &amp; TWO FAMILY DWELLINGS<\/td>\n<td>(-)<\/td>\n<td>There is no requirement for emergency lighting.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>HOTELS AND DORMITORIES<\/td>\n<td>NFPA 101, 2012 (28.2.9 and 7.9)<\/td>\n<td>Emergency lighting is required, except if guest rooms have an exit directly to the outside.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>APARTMENTS<\/td>\n<td>NFPA 101, 2012 (30.2.9 and 7.9)<\/td>\n<td>Emergency lighting is required when the building has more than 12 dwelling units or is more than 3 stories in height.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>MERCANTILE<\/td>\n<td>NFPA 101, 2012 (36.2.9 and 7.9)<\/td>\n<td>Emergency lighting is required for Class A and Class B mercantile occupancy and mall buildings.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>STORAGE<\/td>\n<td>NFPA 101, 2012 (42.2.9 and 7.9)<\/td>\n<td>Emergency lighting is required, except for spaces occupied only during daylight hours with natural illumination.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>INDUSTRIAL<\/td>\n<td>NFPA 101, 2012 (40.2.9)<\/td>\n<td>Emergency lighting is required.<\/p>\n<p>Refer to section 40.2.9 for exceptions.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<h2>Objective<\/h2>\n<p>The objective of having emergency lighting during emergencies or when the normal lighting of the occupied building fails is to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Indicate clearly and unambiguously the escape routes.<\/li>\n<li>Provide illumination along such routes to allow safe movement towards and through the exits provided.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure that fire alarm call points and fire fighting equipment provided along escape routes can be readily located.<\/li>\n<li>Permit operations concerned with safety measures.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section\">\n<h2>Emergency Lighting Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>For all buildings except for One-and-Two-Family Dwellings, emergency lighting shall be provided in all occupancies in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Along exit corridors, egress paths, lobbies, and exit staircases.<\/li>\n<li>Over areas if there are no explicit paths leading to corridors, lobbies, and exits.<\/li>\n<li>In hotel rooms or suites.<\/li>\n<li>Educational occupancies used as assembly, i.e., gymnasiums, concert halls, auditoriums, theaters.<\/li>\n<li>In office rooms larger than 60sqm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notwithstanding the requirements above, emergency lighting shall be provided in the following locations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lift cars.<\/li>\n<li>Emergency command centers.<\/li>\n<li>Generator rooms.<\/li>\n<li>Basement car parks.<\/li>\n<li>Fire pump rooms.<\/li>\n<li>Areas of refuge within the same building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<hr>\n<div class=\"notes\">\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> The information provided in this table is for general reference only.
